Climate control window film is designed to help keep your home’s temperature more even to improve comfort even during the hottest and coldest months of the year. It’s the ideal solution if you experience any of the following:

  • hot or cold spots around windows
  • trouble keeping your home’s temperature at a comfortable level without adjusting the thermostat often
  • high utility bills, especially when it’s hot or cold outside

What Is Climate Control Window Film?

3M™ Thinsulate™ Climate Control Window Film is a premium window film that provides a transparent layer of insulation to windows, glass doors, and skylights. It works without drastically changing the look of your windows, and it still allows plenty of healthy natural light to filter in. A technology proprietary to 3M, Thinsulate is the same insulating material that keeps you warm in ski coats and gloves.

When used on single-pane windows, this type of window film is proven to perform very similarly to double-pane windows. That means you can get virtually the same performance out of your existing windows without the expense and hassle of window replacement.

Even if you already have double-pane windows, Thinsulate can still have a big impact on your window performance. In fact, when tested on double-pane windows, windows treated with this 3M™ film were shown to perform very closely to what you’d expect from triple-pane windows.

How Can Climate Control Window Film Make My Home More Comfortable?

First of all, as we’ve already mentioned, the additional layers of micro-thin film insulate glass. This helps to hold in air that you’ve paid to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Wondering if that really amounts to much? Here’s a telling statistic: A home loses about 30 percent of its heating energy through windows in the winter, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Secondly, climate control window film works to address the biggest issue with windows during the warmer months — heat from the sun. In fact, about 76% of the sunlight that falls on standard double-pane windows in the warm months translates to heat gain in your space.

The tiny microlayers of material in window film are Low-E or low emissivity. This means the film can reflect radiant heat from both the inside and the outside of your home. In the hot months, it blocks out up to 99% of the UV rays and radiant heat from sunlight to keep your home cooler. In the winter, the heat-reflecting technology helps keep more warm heated air indoors.

This improved temperature regulation makes it easier to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures in your home and to control energy costs. In addition, because the film blocks much of the sun’s UV rays, you’ll experience less harmful sun exposure to your skin when indoors. The film also reduces glare from sunlight, making it easier to watch television and view computer and smart phone screens.
